Purpose of the study: Smartphones have become central to our daily lives, and they can be useful tools to help people monitor and improve their mental health and wellbeing. Through the use of smartphones, this study aims to identify factors that trigger negative emotions, suicidal thoughts and substance use in people with severe body image concerns. We hope that the information we learn in this study will contribute to improved treatments for BDD, as a next step.
Eligibility: To participate, interested individuals must be 18+ years old, live in the United States, have distressing body image concerns, own a smartphone, and be fluent in English.
Length of the study: ~10 hours over 3 months
Visit type: Study participants will complete clinical interviews and questionnaires from their home computer, at the start and end of the study. Participants will also complete very brief questionnaires on their smartphone, for two 2-week periods. No in-person visits are needed – all parts of the study can be completed from the participant’s home computer and smartphone.
Payment: You may be compensated up to $257 for your participation.

Purpose of the study: In the Center for Digital Mental Health, we are trying to build more accessible, flexible treatments for individuals with mental health concerns. For individuals who are feeling down, sad, or depressed, we are offering a new digital treatment. In this study, participants receive a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) smartphone app for depression in combination with a therapist. In total, participants get a thorough assessment with a clinician and therapy at no cost.
Eligibility: To be considered eligible for this study, participants must currently live in Massachusetts, be at least 18 years of age, and have reliable access to a smartphone and computer.
Length of the study: All participants receive 8 weeks of app-based treatment plus 8 short (virtual) therapy sessions with one of our licensed clinicians. Participants are also able to continue using the full app with treatment content and exercises for an additional 3 months as well. Participants complete four interviews with a clinician across the study, one before they begin, one at week 4, one at week 8, and one at the end of the study. In addition, we ask that participants complete a brief mood questionnaire once a week. Please note that if you do decide to partake in a baseline appointment, your medications cannot change throughout the study and you cannot participate in any other ongoing or new psychotherapy.
Visit type: All visits are conducted virtually.
Payment: All participants will receive $25 per clinical assessment they complete ($75 for the entire study).
